It’s the world-renowned Spring Gardening Festival soon (on the 19th of September, in fact). and yours truly will be rambling on about growing Ginger, Turmeric, and Galangal in our local bioregion on Kaurna and Peramangk land, of course.
Ages ago, I wrote a piece for Grass Roots magazine (I mss them…) that will be the basis of this one, but I’ve expanded the information and added more detail. We have the page ‘Guaranteeing Ginger’ on this website, but a live action version is always better!
In the leadup to it, I’ve done some heavy lifting work on our post and spiced up the Ginger and Turmeric pages, too. There’s no Galangal page yet in our Materia medica, but it’s on the way.
I’m on early in the day, at a sleepy 8.30 in the morning, but I’m sure I can crank out something entertaining.
You’ll learn about how to choose the best bits to propagate, what to do when you get them, and how to stick them in the ground for maximun success. With the price of food skyrocketing and Ginger being seasonally priced out of the reach of many folks who are struggling, a visit to this event could be a winner.
I hope I’ll see you there!

More Good News! Food Underfoot 2026
The Council are mowing and exceptionally heavy rains have cleaned out Kadlitipari (the South Para river), so in a little while, everything will be set up for Food Underfoot 2026 – the petrol crisis edition!
If you haven’t attended our annual event that’s been running, with varying degrees of success since 2018, its a wander around our local park (Henry Chenoweth Park) looking at foraging wild edibles and medicinals, exploring ecology and chatting about colonialism.
The park is a favourite because of its scenic position on a bend in the river, its even ground, bike path, ease of parking and convenient location in between the Gawler Community House and The Elderly Centre. Oh yeah, there’s ducks too!
It’ll be on Sept 13 this year – booking and info will be forthcoming on this website. Prices are on a sliding scale and nobody is left out for lack of funds. Keep an eye out!
