Definitely not one for diabetics; this remedy is a soothing remedy for sore throats. Alternated with Sage and Lemon tea, you’ll talk up a storm in no time. You can make it in two ways – the hollow onion method and the sliced onion method.
Both work similarly – the sugar draws the moisture and goodies out of the cut edges of the onion. One, though, is better than the other.
Technique #1 The hollow onion

Take any Onion
One method of preparing it that gets a lot of traction online involves hollowing out an onion and packing it with sugar. You then leave it for a couple of hours while the sugar draws the liquid from the onion, forming a nice syrup.

Hollow it out and fill it with sugar

Eventually, you’ll get some syrup.
It works, and has the novelty of a hollow onion but the following method is better.
Technique #2 Sliced Onion
This method is far more productive and takes less time to start cranking out the syrup because manu more cut edges are available for the sugar to draw from. All you do is remove the onion skin and slice it into pieces.

Chop your onion

Layer onion pieces and sugar
Layer them into a jar, alternating or mixing with sugar as you go. I like to press it all down to break up the onion a little more and really pack the sugar in.

I like to pack it down too..
Leave it for a couple of hours and watch the liquid form. Strain it out and enjoy your syrup.
If you want, you can leave it overnight to draw that little bit extra out. I sit it on a filter funnel or seive overnight so that pure drips below. Another trick is to get 10 ml or so of water and pour it over the finished onions to wash off that little extra. You can even swirl the onions in a glass of water together a sweet onion tanged drink if you want to go that far.
How to use it?
Little could be simpler than using your homemade throat syrup. Just have a teaspoon several times a day. Remember, though, if you are using it for kids, it will taste great to them, but it is full of sugar! Alternate with other great sore throat remedies such as Sage tea, hot lemon and honey drinks (with cloves mmmm)…all your favourites!
