Resting and preparing for more. A recent update

Having a coffee at Coffee on Jacob, I’m telling friends that im still resting after last week’s successful herb infused oils workshop at Fulham Community Centre. It was exciting too because I went really high tech (for me, that is) and ran the presentation via a data projector from my phone!

The participants and myself  had a great time and learned lots. As usual though, the event left me exhausted and I didn’t get up until 12. Just in time to wander around and get to sit in some healing sunlight to recover (I’m solar powered😁).

There’s some more events coming up soon. A winter soup veggie growing gig at The Precinct, a pest control talk at the One Planet Market, mushroom foraging presentation at Barossa Bushgardens, a presentation at the Spring Festival at Mt. Pleasant and my own Food Underfoot foraging walk. Also, another one at Fulham later in the year about medicinal honeys, vinegars and oxymels. I’m also hoping to do more free herbal work at the Anti-Poverty Network SA community barbecues, too.

The ABC also contacted me about filming a piece about foraging Fungi but there’s not much out there.

Of course, the Fungi are still there, it’s just that, in the North, at least, the spectacular edibles have decided that the preceeding months weren’t wet enough to warrant sending up the visible sporing bodies. They don’t just need one or two quick downpours but require adequate rain to soak the soil profile in the preceding months. So, I’ve had to temporarily decline the opportunity.

Upcoming booklet

Jelina and I have been working on an oil making booklet but didn’t quite finish it in time for the workshop but it’s not far off and will be put up on this website for sale as our first official publication in the next week or so. We were very close but simplifying some of the technical terms related to fats and oils so that folks can understand them better took much longer than I thought.

I wanted more simplicity for this complex topic, not only to help readers undestand the process of making oils better but because a lot of those things are important to out general health and when we have a blood test, are what our doctors look for, then tell us that our triglyceride or cholesterol or other things are too high, without explaining to us what they are, why they’re there in the first place or what they do in our body.

I’m hoping to be able to present it in a manner that empowers people to understand their blood test results and to make better choices about taking medications. I’m not ‘anti’ these meds, I have to take one myself for a condition that can be moderately controlled but not healed by herbs at my level of experience. I just want to help people decide for themselves rather than blindly take what they are told.

Better recovery time for yourself truly

I’m really happy that I’m hitting my stride this year after so many years of illness. The presentations still take a lot out of me because I like to put 199% into my shows and don’t use any notes and take questions on the fly rather than put aside a time at the end for questions. In past presentations, I’ve found that questions asked in the moment are more meaningful and insightful than those written down and asked when the moment’s passed.

After a workshop, even when I’ve got home, my mind is buzzing with thoughts about how to improve the content and communication style and how to incorporate the answers to the questions people may have had. I’ve found that the Bach Flower Remedy, Vervain helps to gently turn down the pace of the thoughts and help me rest. Sometimes, Rock Water is need to remind me that I’ve done enough and can allow myself to rest. Both contribute greatly to an improved recovery time and reduce the exhaustion  that comes from a hyperactive mind.

  1. I SHOULD be at the Crown and Anchor punk bands Anti Poverty network event.. but safe at home. For..reasons. Who is standing up to Even a Labor govt who prioritise ” Development” over affordable housing and the simple dignities that their hitherto supporter base now face despair and homelessness.
